WILDERNESSFILM (2023)

16mm film, 8-10 mins, expanded performance for three projectors.

An artist’s 16mm film exploring the accidental rewilding of an urban waste ground, created with plants from the site using sustainable filmmaking processes: cyanotypes on recycled film and phytograms on expired filmstock. Plants included: grasses, poppies, dandelions, valerian, hedge mustard and stinging nettle.

The imprints made by the plants on the filmstrip transgress the boundaries of the cinematic frame, as at the site they burst out through the concrete - transgressing man-made boundaries that demarcate the land. In this expanded cinema work the film is fed through a chain of three 16mm projectors. The performers playfully respond to the material and each other in the moment, in improvised, rewilded projection.
