rushes
Work in progress collaboration with Lucy Bergman. Shot on 16mm film whilst resident at Sea Change Film Festival, ‘Rushes’ explores the unique windswept landscape of the Isle of Tiree, the furthest west island in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland.
The film plays with the idea of the double gaze: exploring how we perceive, frame and remember glimpses of landscapes that are strange to us. In the edit we expand this further through working with the concept of ‘rushes’, first as living subjects in the film, which bend to the continuous, relentless winds coming in from the Atlantic Ocean, and secondly, in relation to the practice of filmmaking: filmic ‘rushes’ are a body of raw material that can be assembled into multiple, perhaps infinite iterations or possibilities.
